Who's Dream Is It Anyways?
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Apr. 16, 2009
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
“He’s just living the dream vicariously through his kids”. This phrase comes in many variations and is used by a lot of people throughout the hockey community. It has become a catch phrase of sorts. I’m willing to bet that most people who use it don’t really know what it means. They heard it somewhere and thought it sounded cool. “That guy doesn’t like the coach; he must be living his dream through his kid.” “Don’t like your association’s . . .Full Story

Spring Hockey Has Plenty of Merit
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Mar. 28, 2009
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
So often we hear ex players; many who played extremely high levels of hockey say, “When I was young I did other sports in the summer. Once hockey season ended I never touched the ice again until late August.” Well as Bob Dylan once said “The times they are a changin’.” Although some time away from the sport in the summer months is essential, the explosion of Spring hockey over the last decade has been a factor in how the game is played at all . . .Full Story

Minor Hockey Week - Bitter Taste
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Mar. 1, 2009
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
Another Esso Minor Hockey Week just concluded and once again I can only feel disappointment as opposed to the excitement one should have at what is supposed to be a highlight of the hockey season.
The Problems with Minor Hockey week - Most parents agree with me when I tell them my thoughts about how poor the supposed “double knock out” system is. First and foremost, it is not a . . .Full Story

10 Types of Hockey Parents
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Feb. 1, 2009
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
There is nothing more entertaining than analyzing hockey parents at rinks across the city. Moms and Dads included, they range anywhere from passive to insane. Most of you should be able to place yourself in three or more of these categories.
Bruce Almighty - You've all seen these guys. They are the ones who volunteer for positions in the hockey community at the team or board level and talk just loud enough . . .Full Story

10 Changes Needed In Hockey
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Jan. 15, 2009
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
I often find myself shaking my head in disbelief at some of the things that go on in hockey at both the minor league and professional levels. We let 10 year old figure skaters do triple salchows (pronounced sow cow) on the ice without helmets on and then force grown men who coach hockey to wear helmets at all times. Go figure!!
In this article I have decided to pick on the NHL.
So here is my top 10 list of things that need to change in professional hockey. . . Full Story

Healy Continues Path of Negativity
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Dec. 17, 2008
Glenn Healy was an NHL goalie from 1985 until 2001. His goaltending career can be described as mediocre at best. He was a full time back up outside of a few years on Long Island where he saw as many as 53 games one season. He started out with the Los Angeles Kings where he garnered a fair bit of action for two seasons but was unable to post a GAA of less than 4.27.
Healy played four seasons with the York islanders sharing . . . Full Story

Hockey World Mourns Loss of Maniago
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Dec. 15, 2008 (As Seen In Hockey Now)
“Caring, honest, up front, hard working, generous and accountable”. Those are just a few of the words long time goalie coach and friend Tyler Love used to describe Michael Maniago. In the early hours of November 29, 2008 a tragic motor vehicle accident took our friend Michael from us at the tender age of 20.

Women's Hockey Needs Image Overhaul
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Nov. 15, 2008
(As Seen In Hockey Now)
I am so sick and tired of women’s hockey being treated as the third class citizen in a society with only two classes. In this week’s missive, I will outline my beefs pertaining to the treatment of women’s hockey as a whole and provide a solution that I believe is long overdue. For those of you that saw “women’s hockey” in the title of this article, and moved on to the next, you just proved my point.

Referees and Respect
Written
by Brian van Vliet - November 1, 2008 (As Seen In Hockey Now)
As a hockey community, we are constantly reminded how difficult it is to get quality referees to work games in our minor hockey system. Numerous studies have been conducted into the abuse that referees as young as 14 years old have to endure from enraged parents and coaches. The annual dropout rate of refs is up to the 30 or even the 40% range in some areas. Although this armchair sports fan can’t claim to be an angel when it comes to . . Full Story

FUN in minor hockey
Written
by Brian van Vliet - October 15, 2008 (As Seen In Hockey Now)
With the annual stress of hockey evaluations behind us, most minor hockey teams are getting well into their seasons with exhibition games and possibly tournaments.
As the parent of two kids in Calgary Minor Hockey, I want to share my thoughts on an issue that comes up each season.
Every year we have to endure those hideous team “parent . . Full Story

Ray Emery gets dumped
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Aug. 4, 2008
The Ottawa Senators have spent many seasons
mired in futility. They saw playoff opportunities go by the wayside many times due to weak goaltending performances in big games. We need look no further than a Game 7 between the Sens and the Toronto Maple Leafs a few years back. Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime let in two goals that I swear any other goalie would have stopped with no equipment on. Other goalies that played with the Sens over the years included such notables as . . . Full Story

Spain Wins Championships
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Jul. 8, 2008
So many times you hear a Super Bowl Champion football player exclaim with joy “the world now sees we are the best…” or even better, the baseball championship being called the World Series. It’s funny to me that anything in the US is considered a world wide event. Well here’s a little news flash for all our friends south of the border. The people in Brazil, Africa and China could care less about NFL football. And how can you declare yourself World Champions if you do not allow the Japanese to have . . . Full Story

Pronger, The Roy's, and Politicians

by Brian van Vliet - Apr. 1, 2008
Just when you think that the NHL is getting on track with their disciplinary standards, the roof caves in.
A while back, Chris Simon the notorious cheap shot artist of the NY Islanders (now with Minnesota) stomped on Penguins player Jarkko Ruutu.
Simon had been suspended for 25 games in March 2007 for sticking Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg in the face. That was suspension number 6 for Simon. So rightfully so, discipline boss Colin . . . Full Story

Mats Sundin Shows Loyalty
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Mar. 8, 2008
Congratulations to Mats Sundin for sticking to his guns and refusing to sign off on his no trade contract. I heard so many people ask “Why wouldn’t Mats want to leave Toronto for an opportunity to win a Stanley Cup?” The reason for that is, Mats is not a baby. He’s not one of these guys who thinks that because he played in the NHL for a long time that he should be entitled to ride the coat tails of a good team and get a Stanley Cup. Are you listening Ray Bourque? This armchair sportsfan can’t stand those . . . Full Story

Minor Hockey Goalies
Written
by Brian van Vliet - Feb. 25, 2008
It's time for ALL of minor hockey to get its head out of the sand when it comes to development and on ice training of young goaltenders in the system. Goaltending parents such as myself are getting tired of community coaches who don’t understand that goalies need to be worked with in practice and can no longer be considered merely targets that are just there to stop pucks and challenge their team mates.
Goaltenders need a qualified person on the ice with them for . . . Full Story

The Great Game Of Football
Written
by Brian van Vliet - October 9, 2007
Football is perhaps the best sport on the planet. I have been watching the game for over 30 years. The Canadian Football League is an exciting brand of football, but let’s not kid ourselves it is nowhere near the talent level of the National Football League. US College ball probably has a better degree of talent. So I look at them as two separate sports and get a lot of enjoyment out of both. There are things about the rules of the game and the way that it is coached that I will never understand. I would give anything

Whine Wayne Whine

Do I consider golf a sport? No.
Do I consider golfers athletes? No.
I consider golf a TALENT, much like shooting pool or throwing darts. It’s really hard to do, but it’s not that athletically draining. Because if it were, John Daly would never be seen within 50 miles of a golf course. And he’s not the only one. There are other guys out there that look like they would be better suited sitting in a chair eating chicken wings and drinking beer, adding to their already . . .Full Story

NFL Must Shoulder Some Blame

by Brian van Vliet - August 12, 2007
This armchair sportsfan has berated the likes of Ray Lewis and most recently Mike Vick. I couldn’t stand the fact that Lewis appeared to be involved in a murder and walked away scot free. I was tired of guys like Lawrence Phillips being able to continue playing football after committing numerous offences. NHL Reaches New Low

by Brian van Vliet - July 4, 2007
After the 2004-05 lockout, it had appeared that the National Hockey League had put down it’s perverbial foot. Much to the displeasure of the NHL Player’s Association, a salary cap had been put in place.
Fans had sacrificed watching their beloved sport for a full season for "the betterment of the game." Now that a cap was put in place, gone would be the days where rich teams like New York and Toronto could just throw endless amounts of . . . Full Story

NHL Rewards Failure

So the annual NHL draft is about to take place. Once again one of the worst teams from last season will be rewarded with the first overall draft pick.

Spend It Like Beckham

In January of 2007, the most ridiculous contract in sports history was signed by Britishsoccer (football) superstar David Beckham. Beckham had been playing in Spain for Real Madrid. It’s not the fact that Beckham left Real Madrid to sign for somebody else. It’s not even the reported $250 million dollars he is to receive over the next five years.
